A Brief History of COSMc Productions

That’s COSMc with no i.

COSMc Productions owner Curtis McCoscoCOSMc Productions became an official DBA in 1978 as a vehicle for me to produce a documentary film (these were 16mm days, long before digital anything) about the emergence of ancient and indigenous wisdom in the modern world. Though the epic film has yet to come to pass, that core idea has had numerous manifestations in projects over the years and still informs my writing and personal projects to this day.

My production education began during the psychedelic ‘60s working one of the two major Light Show companies in Los Angeles, Omega’s Eye (the other being Single Wing Turquoise Bird, for whom I also worked occasionally). During those heady years, I worked shows by most of the greatest bands to come to Southern California and got into the habit of carrying a 35mm SLR loaded with B&W film I’d purloined from dumpsters behind Hollywood production houses. Alas, though almost none of those pictures or negatives survived, an abiding love of photography flourished. Somewhere in all this hazy crazy fun the name COSMc Productions was coined, a play on my last name, McCosco, and my overall mindset, being that I’ve always been interested in things spiritual, metaphysical and . . . well, cosmic.

So, it’s COSMc without the i.

Sometime in 1968 I began practicing and studying Nichiren Buddhism which is based on chanting the mantra Namu Myo Ho Renge Kyo. The U.S. branch of the lay organization was then called Nichiren Shoshu of America (with the  same acronym, NSA, as the spy organization) and they had a production department. I could not have been happier. The ‘70s for me were filled with documentary film making and helping produce live multi-media shows, some of which filled baseball stadiums with Busby Berkeley scale pageants. All the while, as I traveled throughout Japan, North, South and Central America, I carried my modest, beat up, manual-adjustment-only Canon snapping pix for the pure pleasure of it. Again, none of those pictures survived the tumult and constantly changing mailing addresses of this hyper-kinetic Bodhisattva.

Following the decade of NSA (today it’s known as SGI, Soka Gakkai International) I worked for 3 years at Motown/Hitsville in Hollywood polishing my skills at building recording studios. I built a few more studios in Hollywood and environs as COSMc Productions, did a lot of freelance lighting and sound work, went broke twice trying to produce documentaries (these were the days before Michael Moore and portable video), landed in Boston where I started up and funded a non-profit food program with my erstwhile girlfriend, built a retirement log home for my father in Vermont; all under the rubric of COSMc Productions.

In 1989 I met my future wife, KatRama, in Los Angeles. We’d first met in 1970 or so when we both worked for NSA, the Buddhist organization. She quickly spirited us both off to Kauai, Hawaii where she had once owned a health food store. COSMc Productions was soon in full swing as I began producing video documentaries and a weekly local TV Astrology Show starring none other than KatRama. Soon I started getting calls to photograph and video weddings. At the same time KatRama was getting calls to officiate weddings. We started getting calls to work the same wedding, so one day we realized it was time to start our own wedding company. Rainbow Weddings was born and COSMc Productions handled all the photo/video aspects, naturally. That was 1998 and we’re still going strong, having fun and helping people see their dreams come true on beautiful Kauai.
